Formed in 2007, SUM MORZ is a dynamic and ever-evolving group of seasoned musicians who bring together decades of musical experience, friendship, and passion for live performance. Known for their high-energy shows and diverse setlists, the band blends rock, pop, blues, R&B, grunge, and party rock into a crowd-pleasing experience that resonates across generations.
At the heart of the band is powerhouse vocalist Crystal "C-Note", whose musical journey began in the show choir halls of South Side High School. It was there she first crossed paths with multi-instrumentalist Maurice Turner - bassist, guitarist, and vocalist - planting the seed for what would eventually become SUM MORZ. Years later, fate brought them back together to form the band that continues to thrive today.
Chad Hyatt has been a cornerstone of SUM MORZ since day one. With talents spanning guitar, vocals, saxophone, and bass, Chad's musical roots go back to fourth grade at Harris Elementary, later honing his craft at Northrop High School. His versatility and longevity have helped shape the band’s signature sound.
The band’s rhythm section has evolved over the years, beginning with Dave Bender on drums, followed by Beto Magana, then Phil Henschen. The torch now rests with Jeff Frye a lifelong musician who started with baritone and drums at Churubusco, playing in both jazz band and show choir.
Lead guitar and harmony were elevated with the addition of Craig Stephan, whose presence was instrumental until his untimely passing in 2024. In his honor, SUM MORZ welcomed Jeff Cottle, a passionate guitarist who picked up the instrument at 14 and never let it go, bringing new energy and emotion to the group’s sound.
SUM MORZ isn’t just a band—it’s a family of musicians and friends who love what they do, and it shows in every note they play.
